July 6 is the birthday of the inimitable Frida Kahlo. We are definitely "Frida Freaks" celebrating her all month long!
Celebrate the color, the strangeness, the wonder, and the beauty of Friday Kahlo with an item from our Feliz Cumpleaños, Frida Kahlo section featuring socks, pins, mugs, books, cards, and even lip balms.
Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón was born in Mexico City, in her parents’ home, the famous “La Casa Azul,” (or “The Blue House.”)
Injured in a tragic bus crash when she was 18, Kahlo was bedridden in a full body cast and unable to move. To help her pass the time, her mother brought her a portable easel and box of paints. The rest, as they say, is history.
Frida Kahlo said, "I never painted my dreams, I painted my own reality." Through her work Kahlo tells her stories through vivid and surreal images that are both shocking and inviting. She is an inspiration for both her art and her activism.
Frida Kahlo has encouraged many women to give voice to their experiences and pursue their passions, whatever obstacles life might pose along the way.
