In the early twentieth century, a uniquely North American architectural style began appearing in the Midwest.

The "Prairie School" was distinguished by long horizontal shapes inspired by the wide-open prairie landscape. Another hallmark was its use of ornamental stained glass windows with patterns that mirror the geometry of the environment. Many buildings in this style by Frank Lloyd Wright and other influential architects can be found in and around Chicago.
